The King County Prosecutor’s Office is reporting that a jury has convicted a 49-year-old Burien man in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man outside a home in Burien on August 28, 2012.

The jury convicted the defendant, Jaspal Gill, of Murder in the First Degree with a Firearm Enhancement as charged for the murder of Harjit Singh, a cab driver.

As we previously reported, police say that a man driving a taxi had just dropped off a 14-year old girl at her Burien home in the 14000 block of 8th Ave South in Burien when another man approached and shot him multiple times in the chest, after allegedly arguing with him.

According to police, Gill turned out to be the girl’s father. He turned himself in at the Burien Police Department shortly after the shooting.

The jury returned a guilty verdict earlier this week.

Gill faces a sentence range of 25 to 31 years in prison, which includes a five-year firearm enhancement.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center.

The case was handled by Senior Deputy Prosecutors Jessica Berliner and Wyman Yip, paralegal Angela Blocki, and victim advocate Karen Kunde.

Prosecutors say the defendant, Christopher Wittman, 25, was impaired by a combination of alcohol and marijuana and was distracted by using a cell phone when he crashed his car through a fence and over an embankment onto Highway 509, where his car landed on top of the victims’ vehicle.

Barbara Eakin died from her injuries, while her husband Clay Eakin was injured in the collision.

The driver of a vehicle that collided with the defendant’s disabled car was also injured.

Several other cars were involved in the chain reaction collision and those drivers also received various injuries.

A man was shot and killed on in the 20100 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. (Nov. 12), according to the Des Moines Police Department.

Police say that an altercation occurred in the front yard of a residence, and an adult male was shot and killed at the scene.

“We believe that the shooter is known by the witnesses inside the residence,” police said. “The shooter fled the scene and officers are working to confirm his identity and the description of the vehicle he fled in.”

Police first got a call at 9:55 a.m., but the call disconnected. When police arrived, “people were running around hysterically,” Doug Jenkins of the Des Moines Police Department said.

Four or five adults were in the home and front yard when police arrived. At some point there was a confrontation between the victim and the shooter. Police don’t know how many shots were fired, nor what the argument was about.

Des Moines Memorial Drive is currently closed between South 200th Street and South 202nd Street as police investigate. Detectives are getting a search warrant.

More details to follow as more information becomes available.

The City of Burien is vowing that it “will vigorously defend itself” against a $16.5 million dollar lawsuit filed against it and King County Thursday (Nov. 13) by the husband and daughter of a woman who was killed in a crash on SR-509 last December when a car crashed through an unmarked dead end.

As we previously reported, Christopher Wittman, 25, was impaired by a combination of alcohol and marijuana and was distracted by using a cell phone when he crashed his car through a fence and over an embankment onto Highway 509, where his car landed on top of the victims’ vehicle.

Barbara Eakin died from her injuries, while her husband Clay Eakin was injured in the collision.

Wittman pled guilty last month to charges of Vehicular Homicide (DUI), Vehicular Assault (DUI) and Reckless Endangerment. The standard sentence range was nine to just over 12 years.

The City of Burien issued this statement Thursday:

Despite strong laws and good law enforcement, a few irresponsible motorists persist in driving drunk. This 2013 accident was caused by an intoxicated driver who sped recklessly down a clearly marked dead end road and struck another car. The plaintiff’s lawyer is trying to make the taxpayers of Burien pay for damages caused by a drunk driver that does not have insurance. The City will vigorously defend itself against this claim.

Man arrested after tense stand-off at Big 5 store in Burien Tuesday

After a very tense four+-hour stand-off, the King County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man at Big 5 Sporting Goods on SW 148th Street Tuesday morning (Dec. 2) after he apparently rammed his vehicle through the front door.

Despite the huge police turnout, and the fact that the man had tried to steal guns from the business, there were no injuries reported. No employees were inside at the time of the attempted drive-through.

Police say that the suspect crashed a mini-van into the front door, drove around inside, then got stuck trying to exit.

He then barricaded himself inside the business, hiding for a while inside the rafters near the ceiling, according to police.

A SWAT team was called, armed police were seen on the roof and around the building, and a heavily armed vehicle was positioned at the front door. A flash grenade was set off, a robot was sent inside, and police used a chainsaw to cut into the roof.

Apparently the usually-locked guns and ammunition cases inside the store were broken into, and police say the suspect had loaded weapons into his vehicle.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) was on scene as the stand-off wound down.

Police closed the usually-busy SW 148th Street from 1st Ave South to 4th Ave SW as a precaution and urged motorists to use alternate routes during the standoff.

At 11:48 a.m., police sent out this Tweet, showing the damage inside the store:

Around 11 a.m. Burien Police announced that one suspect had been arrested:

Police also report that the suspects were “trying to steal guns”:

Deputies first responded around 7 a.m. after receiving a report of a vehicle crashing into the building, located at 125 SW 148th Street.

We haven’t heard yet of any lockdowns at nearby schools, but the administration at Kennedy Catholic High School, located eight blocks to the north, sent out this email:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The news has been covering a break-in at the Big 5 sporting goods store in Burien. At this time 148th Street is closed with tactical teams surrounding the store with suspects inside.

We have been alerted by authorities of a potential safety concern and we remain in close communication for any status changes. The safety committee is on standby to implement lockdown, should it be necessary.

We will keep you informed as the day progresses. The safety of the students is our highest priority.

The Administration

And the Highline School District sent out this notice about Highline High School (located at 225 S. 152nd Street) just after 11 a.m.:

“There is police activity in the area of SW 148th and 1st Avenue at the Big 5 store in Burien. Police have recommended students at Highline High School stay on campus during lunch today so we have closed campus. The activity is currently contained inside the Big 5 store and not affrecting any other schools. We have additional security officers on hand at area schools and are monitoring the situation closely. We will take appropriate steps to keep students safe as directed by the King County Sheriff.”

Here’s a photo courtesy David Sharpe, who added “Very crazy!!! The place was surrounded with police. From what I understand the police caught the robbers. At least that is what one officer told me.”:

The King County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying a serial armed robbery suspect who has struck four motels and one pizza shop in the city of SeaTac since Nov. 15.

All of these robberies have happened since Nov. 15 between Midnight and 3 a.m.

A white male wearing a mask enters the business displaying a handgun and threatens the clerk to hand over the cash. He is described as a white male with a thin build wearing dark blue sweatpants and a dark blue sweatshirt. He has worn a ski mask in all of the robberies and wears ski-type gloves.

In at least a couple of the cases a female accomplice has cased the victim business prior to the robbery either by enquiring if rooms are available or by calling for a shuttle pick up from the airport. Both of these ruses are believed to ensure having just one employee in the business at the time of the robbery.

The suspects were seen at one robbery leaving in a gray or silver 4-door, possibly a Nissan Sentra or Altima. It is believed the suspects have used vehicles other than this one in commission of the robberies:
